The ability to communicate effectively is a fundamental skill for success in both professional and academic environments. This was evident during the 2025 Plain English Speaking Award (PESA) National Final, a competition designed to promote clarity and persuasiveness in spoken English.
Held virtually, the competition featured four of Australia’s most proficient young public speakers: Saxon Miller (QLD), Samantha Lee (WA), Fadzai Bako (VIC), and the national champion, Olivia Wright (NSW). The prepared speeches delivered by these contestants demonstrated a high degree of critical thinking and a solid foundation of research on a range of contemporary issues.
A critical aspect of the competition was the impromptu section, which presented competitors with the considerable challenge of constructing a well-structured argument on an unseen topic with limited preparation time.
Olivia Wright ultimately distinguished herself, delivering an impromptu speech that demonstrated a unique combination of incisive logic and poised delivery. This performance secured for her the title of Australian National Champion for 2025 from the panel of adjudicators.
In July 2026, Ms Wright will represent Australia at the English-Speaking Union’s International Public Speaking Competition (IPSC) in London. This global platform is anticipated to provide a significant opportunity for cultural exchange and personal development, and she is expected to serve as a distinguished ambassador for the nation.
The English-Speaking Union Australia extends its congratulations to all four finalists of the 2025 competition. Their performances underscored the importance of effective public speaking and established a commendable standard for future participants.
